Punta Ala, Towers and Castles.

The towers of the Granducato of Tuscany

The towers of the Granducato of Tuscany were built along the coastal road of the ancient Granucato State, from the second half of the Sixteenth Century, in order to serve as a sighting to prevent pirate raids from the sea. It was a coastal system consisting of 92 towers, scattered throughout the entire Tuscan coast, able to communicate with each other with smoke signals or artillery. A stretch of this ancient road, known as the Strada dei Cavalleggeri, goes from Punta Ala to the Fort of Rocchette. It is practicable only on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike/e-bike. The denomination Strada dei Cavalleggeri is known only from the Seventeenth Century when the towers were also flanked by accommodation and hospitalization posts for the Corpo dei Cavalleggeri, responsible for coastal surveillance. The three towers and coastal fortifications that are encountered along the way were built at different times, in a historical period ranging from the Middle Ages to the Lorraine period.

THE ART…..OF PEDALING!

Discover Art and Miracles by bike it could be a great Adventure!!

MTB tour trough the woods and the hills of the Bandite in the Municipality of Scarlino and in that of Castiglione della Pescaia where important architectures (ruins) are related to the history of these places.

In this territory there are many paths for free ride, all mountain, cross country, suitable for all levels ! These itineraries are all practicable on mountain bikes and vary in difficulty, offering bikers a fun choice between technical trails and easy dirt roads.

The Bandite di Scarlino’s woods offer many possibilities and, depending on requests, it will be possible to choose a path suitable for every level.

Interesting guided tour that led our friends bikers near Caldana. The beautiful architecture of the Church of San Biagio, perhaps the most beautiful of this area, was built by Antonio da San Gallo il Vecchio. During his long activity, this artist had the opportunity to confront the masters of the Tuscan Renaissance, such as Giuliano and Antonio da Sangallo, with the protagonists of the Roman Renaissance, as Bramante or Raphael and with the generation of Mannerism as well as the great Michelangelo of which was rival.

For fans of stories, you will find out that in these woods many miracles happened, and we will tell you anecdotes that reveal for example the story of St. William and the dragon who lived in the woods, or the Saint, daughter of St. Peter, named Petronilla and about her miraculous source hidden in the wood.

If the mystery and the history fascinate you, you just have to immerse yourself in nature enjoying landscapes hoping maybe … in a miracle!

MTB tour trough farms around Castiglione della Pescaia hinterland, to reach Etruscan Via dei Sepolcri, which leads to the monumental tombs of Vetulonia. The tour continues with a visit to the small village of Vetulonia at the top of the hill, where remains of the ancient Etruscan walls, known as Walls of the Arce are preserved.
