The towers of the Granducato of Tuscany
The towers of the Granducato of Tuscany were built along the coastal road of the ancient Granucato State, from the second half of the Sixteenth Century, in order to serve as a sighting to prevent pirate raids from the sea. It was a coastal system consisting of 92 towers, scattered throughout the entire Tuscan coast, able to communicate with each other with smoke signals or artillery. A stretch of this ancient road, known as the Strada dei Cavalleggeri, goes from Punta Ala to the Fort of Rocchette. It is practicable only on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike/e-bike. The denomination Strada dei Cavalleggeri is known only from the Seventeenth Century when the towers were also flanked by accommodation and hospitalization posts for the Corpo dei Cavalleggeri, responsible for coastal surveillance. The three towers and coastal fortifications that are encountered along the way were built at different times, in a historical period ranging from the Middle Ages to the Lorraine period.
